Road communication, raising of more battalions of Arunachal Scouts, law and order situation in Tirap, Changlang and Longding and welfare program by the Army for the local people of Arunachal Pradesh have come up for discussion during the meet.

Expedite investigation on Tongam Rina case: IFJ
SHILLONG, Jun 10: The two days regional seminar cum workshop organized by South Asia Media Solidarity Network (SAMSN), a division of the International Federation of Journalist (IFJ) being held at Shillong Club in association with Indian Journalist Union and Shillong Press Club ended today. The theme of workshop was journalist’s safety, increasing security and ending impunity to the attackers. The most important event of the day was presentation on the situation reports and campaign priorities by representatives of various.
Arunachal Press Club (APC) president Taba Ajum listed safety and security of working journalists as the biggest concern for the media fraternity of his state. He explained in details about how Press persons are regularly threatened and intimidated by various groups in the state. He also highlighted the failure of state police to nab the culprit involved in the assassination bid on Tongam Rina case.
“It’s going to be one year but the police have failed to make any arrest. There are other cases of attacks on various media houses and individual journalists. Police has failed to take strong action against attackers in all the cases,” said Ajum.
The representatives of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Sikkim and also journalists from mainland India shared how journalists are being targeted.
In Assam alone more than 24 journalists has been killed in the last few decades while in Manipur 7 media persons has been killed till date. In all these cases the respective state police have failed to make any arrest or breakthrough. The members present also expressed serious concern over how various newspaper owners in the NE region has failed to implement recommendation of various wage boards constituted to ensure proper salary structure for the media persons.
Meanwhile a resolution was adopted by members of International Federation of Journalist and Indian Journalists Union demanding government of Arunachal Pradesh to expedite the investigation on Tongam Rina case and take strong measure for safety and security of press persons in Arunachal Pradesh. They also called on govts of Assam and Manipur to give status report on various cases related to journalist killing. After long discussion, the members also selected interim committee of newly formed North East India Federation of Journalists (NIJF). B B Lahkar, senior journalist of Assam Tribune newspaper and vice president of Journalists Union of Assam was selected as president, while President of Shillong Press Club David Laitphlang was selected as secretary general.
APC president Taba Ajum was selected as vice president of NIJF. The federation will seek affiliation with Indian Journalists Union which will enable it to get affiliation with International Freedom of Expression Exchange. The federation will lobby government, media publishers, broadcasters, international community and other relevant bodies in support of freedom of expression and rights of media workers with special focus on North East region.
Secretary of Indian Journalists Union Geetartha Pathak while summing up the gathering emphasized on the need for better coordination between journalist communities of NE region, so that every media related issues can be fought unitedly. He also spoke about the need for journalist communities of NE region to develop network with fellow fraternities’ members from national and international level.
Pathak believed that North East India Federation of Journalists (NIJF) will play the crucial role of connecting press fraternities of NE region with rest of the world.

Know Your Army Mela is an exhibition to encourage the youths to join the armed forces and strengthen bonds between Army and local people.
In his inaugural address, Yuva Arunachal President Chombay Kee applauded the efforts of Army in growth of Tawang.
Parliamentary Secretary Jambey Tashi spoke in length on various issues where civil and military force can work together. He also expressed gratitude to army for contributing immensely towards development of the district.
Tawang Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Dev, Zilla Chairperson Jambey Tsering and Commander 190 Mtn Bde Brigadier J S Rajpurohit were also present on the occasion.
The ‘Mela’ witnessed people participating not only from Tawang but also interior villages and Jung as well.
A total of 20 stalls were put up and various equipments and weapons with requisite details were displayed. To entertain the audience a vivid pipe band display and performances by the garrison jazz band was also on offer.
The information stall which provided information on various entry schemes of army with the help of books, charts and video clippings was an added attraction.
A cultural programme exhibiting the rich cultural heritage in the form of traditional dances of India was a soothing experience. The cultural programme was presented by the troops as well as civilians of Tawang.
A painting competition was also organized where 354 painters participated.
“This Mela will certainly help civilians know army better, help strengthen the bond between the Army and local people and encourage youths to join the Indian Army,” the release said.
DRP report on Lower Subansiri a mere eyewash: KMSS
Guwahati, Jun 10: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti today alleged that the Dam Design Review Panel (DDRP) report on Lower Subansiri Hydro Power Project was merely an eyewash and has not addressed the areas of major concern raised by various quarters.
"The DDRP has converted all larger and complex issues related to Lower Subansiri Hydro Power Project as a mere issue of spillway trouble which means some minor technical problem related to overflow of stored water from the dam", KMSS President Akhil Gogoi told reporters here today.
The DDRP report has not addressed the larger issues of landslides, downstream impacts, flood control, ecological damages to aquatic wealth and earthquakes, he alleged.
The full DDRP report is not in public domain and the three page conclusions and recommendations that have been made public does accept a number of fundamental concerns about the safety, design and adequacy of the Lower Subansiri project, highlighted by earlier reports but the refusal to accept other conclusions, including inadequacy of the seismic design parameters was unacceptable, Gogoi said.
Moreover, the DDRP constituted of largely government officers, mainly from the same institutions that had so far sanctioned and pushed the project in current form and which had already proved to be unsafe.
"This body, therefore, cannot be trusted and the report of the DDRP will need to be reviewed by a credible independent body", he added.

with the safety of the lives of thousands living in the project impact zone-
Congress regime ruins people’s aspiration: PPA

ROING, Jun 10: People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) legislator Laeta Umbrey has dubbed the Congress government in the state as ‘sell out,’ and accused it of letting down the aspirations of Arunachali people. Umbrey was speaking to his supporters yesterday in the Multicultural centre in Roing to mobilize support for the party.
Umbrey attacked the Congress stalwarts in the state saying “they cannot even raise their heads in front of Congress high command in New Delhi.” He said it is unfortunate that to these leaders we call them ‘Honourables.’
Referring to such gestures as ‘slave mentality’, Umbrey said such attitude is not acceptable to any self respecting Arunachali. “The Congress regime in the state has crushed the aspirations of our Arunachali people.”
Claiming PPA party as the true representation of Arunachali people, he said it is the only a regional party that can fulfill the true socioeconomic and political aspirations of our people.
He rubbished the notion that without toeing the Centre, the state will be unable to stand on its own without central assistance. Citing the example of Nagaland, he said, “The state is ruled by Naga People’s Front (NPF), a regional party. Yet they are not falling behind in development or in generating resources of their own.”
He asks, “Has Centre stopped giving assistance to Nagaland because it is ruled by a regional party?”
Claiming PPA to have strong support base among intellectual masses of the state, he said in his 25 years in politics as parliamentarian and as legislator, he never felt responded so much as today after he joined PPA.
Umbrey lamented that because the Congress regime in the state is at the mercy of high command, huge amount money is lavishly spent during the visits of central ministers and observers. “This is appeasing and causes unnecessary lose to our state exchequer.”
He made a point in stating that state government has no role in any of the visible infrastructure projects today. He said in the past, under mere Rs 300 crore as annual state budget, the state was able to manage all the developmental activities, cutting roads in the mountains, building offices and schools.
“The roads that we see today are funded by Central Road Funds (CRF). The facilities we get in hospitals are managed under central schemes like NRHM. The school facilities are all provided through central assistance under SSA and RMSA. So where is the annual state allocation of Rs 3500 crore pocketed?”
Today’s gathering was also a morale boosting exercise for the party after PPA faced huge setback in the recent panchayat polls held in May 16.
“We must accept failures. In my political career, I have faced defeat several times, and also seen victories,” he told his supporters.
He, however, claimed “PPA had better candidates compared to Congress. If we put up open debate, then they can’t fare in comparison with our candidates. Nor are they capable, they lack experience. All they have is the strength of money and greed for posts.”
NHPC scholarships to students of project affected families

ROING, Jun 10: National Hydro Electric Corporation (NHPC) Limited awarded merit scholarship amounting to Rs 2.87 lakh in total to 35 meritorious students from the Project Affected Families (PAF) of 3000MW Dibang Multipurpose Project (DMP) in a simple ceremony held in Anchal Samity Hall here today.
This scholarship is paid as grant to the students under NHPC’s Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) and in fulfilling its promise for educational upliftment of local communities.

Change in educational qualification not desirable
Dear Editor,
This is in reference to the letter “Make amendment” (June 6) written by some of our friends. Many of Arts graduates have already applied for the said post, so it would not be appropriate to change the education qualification to Diploma in Disaster management in the middle of recruitment process.
We would also like to appeal to APPSC not to make Maths paper compulsory one for the posts of Field Publicity Officer (FPO) and Field Officer (FO), or else, please reduce the marks of maths paper to 50 % in comparison to other papers. Only this way, there will be fair competition for the Arts students.
